HOW TO: HAVE A PROPER SKINCARE ROUTINE.


Prepare a pen and a notebook. It is time to sort your skincare routine in an orderly manner.

No matter if you are into a 3-steps skincare routine or a 10-steps K-skincare routine, it is all about applying the right products as you go along. You do not want to splurge on a luxury product and forget about it because it "doesn't seem" to work for you. There is a reason for each step why cleanser is first, followed by serum, moisturiser, sunscreen. the steps on how you layer your products will prove how well they work. Sometimes you might wonder where/when do you fit the bottle of face oil or a tube of spot treatment in your regime, well wonder no more. Here, we will explain thoroughly the importance of understanding the most effective way to apply every single product in your routine.

Refer to the table above, the detailed breakdown for your morning and night skincare routine. It is important to start with a cleanser so that the other active products that come after will soak and seal into our skin. This is the most efficient and effective way to have the best order of products in your daily routine.


1. Cleanser


Application: Day & Night.


Unless you are looking forward to having pimples (obviously, you don't), please clean your face thoroughly. I highly recommend using cleansing oil because it is gentle to all skin types and at the same time it keeps your skin feeling plush and hydrated. It will not strip away the natural moisture from your face, unlike foam cleansers do.


First thing in the morning, you use cleansing oil to remove the night products you applied so that way we can start with a fresh clean face for your morning routine.


End of the day, removing your makeup should always be your first step. Oil-based cleansers are perfect for removing makeup because the oil consistency helps to dissolve tough makeup particles and dirt from the outside but yet still gentle on the face. For a second cleanse after removing makeup, you can use the same cleansing oil to remove leftovers dirt and give yourself a good face massage and you are good for your night routine.


2. Toner


Application: Day & Night.


The next thing that goes on your face? Toner. The reason is simple. Toner helps to close pores and provides an instant boost of hydration after cleansing. It acts as a first base treatment to protect your skin from environmental pollution. For those with oily and acne-prone skin, you should consider looking for toners that contain glycolic or salicylic acid to help calm and reduce redness on the skin.

























3. Face scrub (Exfoliate)


Application: Night only (1-2 times a week).


It is good to exfoliate your skin on a weekly basis to remove the build-up dirt especially makeup products that have been accumulated throughout the week. A gentle face scrub is good enough. There is a misconception that the more vigorous you scrub, the more dirt you remove. WRONG! You are hurting the skin tissue by doing so. The reason for exfoliation is to bring newer, healthier skin cells to the surface and remove the clogged dirt and dry/flaky skin that is preventing your skin to breathe. For acne-prone skin, it is not wrong to exfoliate your skin actually it is good that you are doing so because you get to eliminate the bacteria that has penetrated on the face over time. After exfoliation, rinse your face with cold water to close the open pores and pat it dry gently with a face cloth.
























4. Antioxidant Serum


Application: Day only.


Antioxidant serum contains the most active concentrated ingredients required for the skin and it is important to do it at the earliest in your routine that way your skin can absorb all the minerals it needs. Remember to always apply the thinnest and followed by the thickest textured consistency.


For daytime, pick a serum that has protective properties like Vitamin C, Vitamin E that will protect your face from UV rays and harsh environmental pollutions.


For night time, pick a serum that contains repair and restoration properties like Vitamin A, Vitamin B to help rejuvenate the skin collagen and regenerate the elasticity and firmness to improve our skin texture while we are sleeping. It is important to focus on the right antioxidant serum especially at night because that is when our skin takes its time to repair damaged cells, regenerate new cell growth, and improve skin recovery.


























5. Face Mask


Application: Night only (1time a week).


Not only does it helps to improve our overall skin texture but it is the most therapeutic thing ever. Face masks are packed with good active ingredients that will benefit our skin focus point. Different face masks cater to different skin concerns so it is important to pick the right face mask. You can start out by picking the ones with Vitamin C, Hydrating, and Brightening, those are the important elements that your face needs on a weekly basis.






















6. Eye Cream


Application: Day & Night.


Eye cream is an important step in a skincare routine. It is not a high-end moisturiser for the eye and it is advisable not to use your face moisturiser for the area around the eyes. Eye cream has its own consistency to treat the concerned area around the eyes.


"Eye creams are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eye, so they tend to be thicker. They contain more oil than a regular facial lotion, and they have a lot of active ingredients aimed at the problems we see around the eyes," says dermatologist Patricia Farris, MD, a clinical associate professor at Tulane University School of Medicine and a practicing dermatologist in Sanova Dermatology clinic center.


Our eyes work the hardest hence it causes the areas around our eyes to feel fatigued and dehydrated. Sometimes we squint and that will cause the area around our eyes to develop fine lines, wrinkles, and those who are late sleepers, are likely to notice dark circles. By applying eye cream, this helps to contribute to the nourishment our eyes needs and reduce the fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles over time because of the selective active ingredients that the area of the eyes needs. Look for ingredients that contain hyaluronic acid, caffeine, and ceramides (this will help hydrate, brighten, and lock the moisture around the eyes).

























7. Acne Spot Treatment


Application: Day only.


You need to use an acne spot treatment for active breakouts only and that is to be used in the day. Apply in the smallest amount on the affected area and wait for it to dry before applying moisturiser. The reason for applying acne spot treatment in the day is because this will protect your active breakout from bacteria caused by makeup particles and environmental pollution.























8. Moisturiser


Application: Day & Night.


This is when you have to keep your skin hydrated. Moisturisers are meant to hydrate and seal the moisture that your skin needs and at the same time, acts as a protective barrier from environmental pollution and dirt from the outside. For daytime, we tend to use lightweight moisturiser since we are applying makeup it is best not to clog our pores with too much thick texture.


If you are using a heavy moisturiser in the day time, you can opt for a tinted moisturiser as a makeup base. Tinted moisturiser is lightweight that way your face will not feel too congested. But if you are applying a thicker makeup base like a liquid foundation then it is advisable to use a lightweight moisturiser so it allows your skin to breathe a little.


For night time, we tend to use a heavier consistency moisturiser to lock the hydration while we sleep. This is the time our skin works extra hard to restore and strengthen the skin cells from external harmful factors. That's why it is important to find the right moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and glycerin to improve and treat our skin recovery.


9. Treatment (Antiaging serum, AHA, Retinol)


Application: Night only.


Like I mentioned before, our skin repairs and restores any impurities skin cell in the night when we sleep. This application is best suited at the night. With the specified treatment in place, this will penetrate and help the skin work on major concern areas of the face. This step is up to your preference on which focus area you want to improve. Keep it as minimal as possible, under 2 products so that the active ingredients can penetrate into the skin and make it work better.























10. Sunscreen


Application: Day only.


Sunscreen is the most important essential step. No matter if you are outdoors during the day or night, it is a must to apply sunscreen. Even if your makeup base contains SPF, it is still not enough. It is a must to apply sunscreen as many times as you can. There is a reason why sunscreen is the last step because it acts as a protective barrier from any external harsh environmental factors, especially from the UV rays. The reason for applying sunscreen does not only do it protect your skin but it slows down the aging process of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation that will appear over time due to unprotective measures.


11. Face Oil


Application: Night only.


Face oil has the most concentrated active elements in treatment. It is best to apply in the night when our skin rebuilds the collagen and repairs the skin cells. The face oil active ingredients will absorb and nourished into the skin cells and at the same time seal moisture from within the skin. With the face oil treatment, it will focus on your targeted face concerns to make it better. For example, if you are applying Vitamin C face oil, the skin will absorb the active ingredients and regenerate skin to look bright and fresh the next morning.
